Connection of Green Book Climate Labs

Summerize Activity 1

Activity one went as planned we got the results we expected. We thought that the black soil would heat up the fastest and that the sand would heat up the next fastest and that the water would heat up the slowest. fWe thought that this would be the case because the suns rays are attracted to black and that water is very hard to heat. We knew that water is hard to heat because of lakes and things dont warm up very fast but hold their heat for a long peroid of time.

Summerize Activity 4

We did not get the data we expected on this one. We thought that the bottles with the black soil would warm up the fastest which it should have. However, this was not the case the one with the sand and the clouds did. However, this is not possible as I described in my previous post about this topic one of the sand and cloud bottle group put their bottle in the sink throwing off results.

Paragraph 3 Summerize About Small Scale labs and Climate project

Small sclae labs help break down the big unknows for us and make them more cromprehanable. If we look at the big picture we can be overwelmed and not understand. However, when we break it down into these small labs it shows us whats really happeninbg and the importance of it. I personaly like small sclae labs because it shows why and how things are happening. Its alot better than reading or being lectured about how it happens.  I could do a small scale project of freezing rain by in the winter when its snowing warm snowflakes by using a heater before they hit the ground to get them to freeze on contact with the ground. Im not sure if this would work but it sounds good.

Bad Astronomy

2 Facts that I thought were right from the movie are:
1)That the comet would vent as it did in the movie. When the sun warms the comet surface it causes gases to go "crazy."
2) There is no gravity on a comet an ordinary person would only weight 12 grams. The asternauts would have not been able to walk on comet without teathers.

2 Facts that I was wrong about:
1) I thought that the sun would burn the persons face like that when the sun light came in contact with his skin. However, the website said it would not happen like that that fast, added for drama.
2) I thought that the asteroid would be going about the speed it was when it enterd the earths atmopsher however it really would have been in the atmopsher for about 10 sec.

A commen misconception:
Bad Moon Rising: Sun is always in the sky even during the day. I thought it was behind the earth.
The Sky at night: Stars actualy emit the colors of the rainbow but look white. I thought the stars just emited white light.
A Step Farther Out: I thought that asteroids hit the earth only every now and then however this is evidence to believe the "snowball" sized asteroids burn up everyday.

Climate Inquiry

Climate Change - Health and Environmental Effects, U.S. EPA, http://www.epa.gov/climatechange/effects/extreme.html, 09/08/2009

This is a very informative website it gives describes what is bad for the environment and the effects that each is having. Some of the more extreme events that can occur for temperatures rising only 1-2 degrees  could change weather, rising water as polar ice caps are melted. This will cause irrigation waters to have salt  in them which will be unable to water plants. Also, water rising will take over land near the cost.

New Scientist, Reed Business Information Ltd,  http://www.newscientist.com/topic/climate-change

Sry no date

This website gives information about some of the more controversial environmental issues. Such as whether or not global warming is actually happening. This website offers a chance for people to talk about their ideas very interactive. Other than that very similar to EPA site.

SEWER PARAGRAPH

At the sewer plant I learned that sewer water that comes into the plant is a grey watery mixture not what you would think. I also learned that in the next 10 years over 40% of the people in the water treatment profession will retire. This will leave a lot of jobs open, that need to be filled because of its importance. Sewer treatment is all about removing wastes from sewer and returning water. This is done by numerous process. First when the sewer enters the plant it is sent through grinders which break up any solids. The sewer water then goes threw a auger to remove any foreign materials such as plastics and such. The sewer water then goes to a large holding tank where it is circulated slowly without adding oxygen for non-oxygen organisms to eat solids. The sewer water then travels to another tank were it is turned and splashed so oxygen is added for organisms that need oxygen to survive. These organisms also feed off the waste in the water. Couple of process later the water is left alone in a tank where solids settle to bottom and floaters go to top these are swept of top and removed from bottom.

Recycling is very important because it reuses what we have used once so that we can redo it again, and again. This helps reduce our footprint on earth by the resources we use and the emissions released when creating products. Also, recycling is a way for the public to say we find it important to recycle and we care about environment, I have been recycling and always will continue to recycle because I feel it is important to take care of the environment and preserve it for future generations.

Q'S and Answers

1. What was the woman's name? Her Job?
Ms. Byerly, project manager
2. What did the city do to the storm water?
The city has taken out 10 storm drains that run directly into the grand reiver from the city. They have replaced these with 2 exists which have water filtration systems to keep oil, debris, and brake particles from going into river. Befrore this action was taken there was nothing stopping these waste from entering the river.
3. How will this action improve the overall water quality of the river?
Keeps out waste and oils and such that will not harm animals and plants.
4. What will happen to the quality of the test your group was responsible for?
They will go to an internet site that will be added to an long list of other groups doing similar tests to create a data table that can be compared to years pasts water testing.
5. What was one other thing you learned yesterday from the talk that was interesting?
Something that I learned yesterday that I thought was intersting was that the city is think about adding a whiter water rapids by taking out one of lowhead dams. These white water rapids would be used for kyaking, canoing, and white water rafting.
6. How is your biobottle doing?
My bio bottle is doing ok, I think that someone added something to it that wasnt supposed to be in there becausae its been really wet and a white milky liquid is starting to grow. Grass is growing ok, but not as good as Stines which is very similar.
7. What are your doing personally for your action project?
Personaly Im doing everything for our group.
8. How far are you on your Lexus PowerPoint?
On our kexus project our group is not to far, we need to add pics and stuff but making progress.

My group chose to have nitrates as our topic.
For our action project we are planning to find out the effects of mcdonalds pop, chicken nuggets, and plastic have on our enviroment. If we find that these are dangerous and harmful to the eviroment then we find out why it bad for the enviroment. What the long term and short term concicunces are and how we can solve the problem. Some ways to solve the problem could be by advicating a receycling program, proper disposal, or reduction.
We will be testing our bio-bottles by comparing our findings to the constant bottle which is to reflect a perfect ecosystem.

(NEED TO REVIEW PACKET WAS ABSENT)

Nitrates are very dangerous for the enviroment because they can cause dead zones in the water (Little to no oxygen) also nitrates are very harmful to infnts in drinking water.  Nitrates have been the greatest realesed polutant in the terms of volume.

WATER TREATMENT PLANT

WHAT LEARNED:

Yesterday I learned that our water pressure comes from the water towers which hold together i million gallons of water. I also learned that our city gets its water from a well under the grand river, but its 300 ft under the river in rock. Other wells our city draws water from are around 60 ft deep and are moniterd heavily for contaminents. Our city not only filters  our water but it also adds chemicals to promote better health. Floride for your teeth and bones. Chlorine to kill different bacteria, and phospurose to coat the pipes toprotect us from led, and iron. Our city has about 32 miles of water main. Also, I learned that our city has about 5-6 water main breaks a year, mostly in the winter.

Water Filtration

1. Explain how water is filtered and cleaned in a city for drinking.

Reverse Osmosis removes many types of large molecules and ions from solutions by applying pressure to the solution when it is on one side of a selective membrane

2. Explain how sewer water is treated and returned to the river or lake.
Process remove waste from water and turn it into solid form (Sludge) and return water to lake. Process includes physical, chemical, and biological, processs.
3. 2 good questions to ask tomorrow

1) How much sewer runoff escape to GR?
2) Hw much will escape with new filtration system?
